From Refund Delay to Relief

June 26, 2026 | Written by: Kate F.
Happy couple looking at documents

When Elaine and Robert filed their 2023 tax return, they expected their refund to arrive without any issues. Instead, months passed with no payment, followed by an IRS CP05A notice that only added to the confusion. The letter appeared to ask for wage information, even though the couple had been retired for years and no longer earned wages. Their income came from retirement distributions, Social Security, and investments, so the notice made little sense. Like many taxpayers in this situation, they were left wondering what had gone wrong and how they were supposed to fix it.

Fortunately, Elaine and Robert remembered that they had purchased Audit Defense and quickly reached out to TaxAudit to start a case. They first spoke to a customer service representative, Keyawna, who confirmed their membership and explained the process moving forward. Their case was then assigned to a case coordinator, who gathered the initial IRS notice and tax return and helped move the matter quickly to their tax professional, Cara.

Cara informed the couple that, although the IRS notice referenced employment information, the real issue was verifying the federal withholding reported from their retirement income. Cara walked them through exactly what documents were needed, including Forms 1099 and supporting statements from multiple financial institutions. Elaine and Robert worked to gather all the requested documentation and uploaded everything to the secure TaxAudit portal. Cara then prepared a response for the IRS, which was reviewed by the quality control department. Once approved, the response was sent to the IRS on their behalf by the administrative services department.

However, as is often the case with refund delays, the waiting did not end there. The IRS took months to review the response, and the case required constant follow-up. Throughout that time, Cara stayed in touch, checked on the status with the agency, explained each update, and reassured Elaine and Robert that the case was still moving forward. Even when the timeline stretched longer than expected, they were not left in the dark.

Eventually, the patience paid off. After seven months of waiting, the IRS accepted the response sent and released their refund. Not only did Elaine and Robert receive the original refund amount, but they also received interest due to the lengthy delay. What began as a frustrating and confusing situation ended with a full resolution and money finally in their account. This outcome brought both financial relief and peace of mind after months of uncertainty.

At the conclusion of their case, Elaine and Robert had this to say about working with their tax professional, Cara.

“She was excellent - helped me through every step of the way in what was a very annoying withholding of my refund for over a year - and in the end, thanks to Cara, they paid me the full amount plus interest.”

This case is a good reminder that IRS notices do not always tell the full story at first glance. A notice that seems incorrect or unclear can still require a detailed and timely response. With experienced representation, careful documentation, and consistent follow-up, even a long-delayed refund can be resolved successfully.
